Reiki Precepts

What is the Significance of the Reiki Precepts?

Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Originally written by Reiki founder Dr. Mikao Usui, the Reiki Precepts or Principles are excellent guidelines to live by both for the Reiki Practitioner and others as well.  These guidelines bear striking similarities to many spiritual schools of thought, and carry a universal application which is beneficial for all who practice them.

  • Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:34 (NIV).
  • The best fighter is never angry.  Lao Tzu.
  • Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable.  Be honest and transparent anyway.  Mother Teresa.
  • Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.  Psalm 95:12 (NKJV).
  • This is my simple religion.  No need for temples.  No need for complicated philosophy.  Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness.  Dalai Lama XIV.
The Reiki Precepts teach the student to take one day at a time.  “Just for today . . . ” offers us the idea that only on this day should we refrain from worry and anger.  “Just for today . . . ” we should be honest, give thanks, and be kind.  The idea of “just for today” keeps us focused on our present moment, and not on the worries of our past or the worries of our future.

So many people concern themselves with the worries of yesterday.  Actions or concerns of yesterday cannot be “undone”. Concerns for tomorrow cannot be addressed until then.  Today we are to seek peace through applying these principles.  If we stay in the present, we can see and acknowledge the opportunities to grow that are presented today.
